From Understanding to Embodying

Inside the Embodiyou Method Certification

As therapists, we spend years learning how to understand and support their clients. We study theories, explore therapeutic approaches, and develop skills to help people navigate difficult emotions and experiences.

But understanding how the nervous system works is different from being able to recognize and respond to what's happening in the body, in real time.

It's a distinction that Ramona Ndlovu, LMFT, Lead Trainer at the Embodiyou Institute, knows firsthand.

Learning to Be Present, Not Just Perform Presence

Early in her journey, Ramona began to recognize a disconnect between what she understood intellectually and what she could actually feel.

As a new parent, she noticed that she often struggled to identify her own emotions. Sometimes it took days or even weeks to recognize how she felt about an experience. Without that awareness, she found herself relying on her mind to determine how she should feel and behave.

She describes it as the difference between performing presence and genuinely being present. That realization set her on a path of personal exploration and professional training that eventually led her to somatic therapy and the Embodiyou Method.

Today, Ramona is a licensed marriage and family therapist, certified somatic therapist, licensed massage therapist, and faculty member at the Somatic Therapy Center. Her work integrates body-based approaches, interpersonal neurobiology, and a deep understanding of how our experiences shape the way we relate to ourselves and others.

Through her own experience, she discovered that developing greater awareness of her internal experience changed how she showed up, both personally and professionally. As Ramona explains, being present from her whole being feels more authentic and replenishing, rather than draining. It's an understanding she now brings to her work training other therapists.

Bringing Somatic Learning Into the Body

Many therapists graduate with a strong foundation in psychological theory but relatively little hands-on experience working directly with the body and nervous system. They may understand concepts like nervous system regulation, attachment patterns, and the window of tolerance without having had the opportunity to experience and practice these skills themselves.

The Embodiyou Method Certification was developed by Rebecca and Ramona to help bridge that gap. Rather than introducing therapists to a collection of separate somatic techniques, the program teaches one comprehensive, experiential method that can be integrated into clinical practice.

Through live demonstrations, guided exercises, reflection, and repeated practice, participants learn to recognize what's happening in their own nervous systems while developing the skills to support clients. The emphasis is on making the work something therapists can access naturally, rather than another set of techniques they have to remember to apply.

What We Learned From Our First Certification Cohort

Earlier this year, we welcomed our inaugural group of therapists into the Embodiyou Method Certification. Throughout the training, participants had opportunities to experience the method firsthand, observe demonstrations, practice with one another, and reflect on what they were noticing in themselves and their clinical work.

Their feedback reinforced something central to the Embodiyou approach: learning to work with the nervous system begins with developing awareness of our own.

“As a licensed therapist with extensive training in trauma, attachment, nervous system regulation, parts work, yoga, and mindfulness, I can honestly say this program has elevated my clinical work in ways I didn't expect ... It bridges neuroscience, embodiment, and clinical application in a way that is easy to integrate into practice while also fostering meaningful personal growth. I would highly recommend it to any clinician who wants to move beyond insight-based therapy and facilitate deeper, lasting transformation for their clients.”

— Jasmine Gambino

“This is the FIRST certification program in which I've been challenged to actually work from the inside out—not just 'playing like I was the client', but truly understanding the method personally, in order to deliver it in a more integrated and meaningful way.”

“Knowing that I have a new perspective with which to deliver care (for myself and others), excites me! I have actually SEEN this method work in real time - with myself, group members, and clients - not just theoretically.”

— Barbara Shabazz

“This program has helped me manage my own emotions in my personal life as well as in sessions. It has also given me useful tools to help my clients get in touch with the root of some complicated feelings. It has also shown me ways to help them access more clarity or calm.”

— Rose Pile

Participants also spoke about the value of practicing the skills themselves before bringing them into sessions, and how watching the method demonstrated in real time helped deepen their understanding and confidence.

For some, the training offered a new way to experience concepts they had encountered throughout their education and professional development. For others, it helped them become more aware of their own responses, recognize when they were moving outside their window of tolerance, and find ways to return to a more regulated state. These are skills that support therapists in their clinical work while also contributing to their own well-being.

Creating Space for Practice, Reflection, and Integration

At the heart of the Embodiyou Method Certification is the belief that experiential learning takes time, practice, and a supportive environment. That's why the program unfolds over 15 weeks, allowing participants to return to the skills, explore them from different perspectives, and gradually integrate them into their work.

Through live demonstrations, guided practice, and experiential learning, Rebecca and Ramona help participants develop six core somatic skills they can integrate into their clinical work.

Throughout the process, participants are encouraged to bring curiosity to their own experiences, notice what emerges, and develop greater flexibility in how they respond.

As Ramona's own journey demonstrates, this work isn't about achieving a permanent state of regulation or getting it right every time. It's about building the awareness and capacity to respond to ourselves and others with greater presence. And that can change what becomes possible in the therapy room.
